Methodology
The Piotroski F-Score is a 9-point scoring system that evaluates a company's financial strength based on its most recent annual report (10-K filing). One point is awarded for each criterion met:
Profitability (4 pts)
- Positive net income
- Positive operating cash flow
- Rising return on assets
- Cash flow exceeds net income
Leverage (3 pts)
- Decreasing long-term debt ratio
- Improving current ratio
- No new share issuance
Efficiency (2 pts)
- Improving gross margin
- Improving asset turnover
For a detailed explanation of each criterion and how to interpret the score, see our Piotroski F-Score Guide.
Limitations
- Data timeliness: Scores are based on the most recent 10-K filing, which may be up to 14 months old for some companies. Fiscal year end dates vary by company.
- Sample: This analysis covers 473 companies with available data, not all 500 S&P 500 constituents. Companies lacking sufficient financial history are excluded.
- Sector bias: Financial sector companies operate under different accounting standards, which may affect comparability of certain criteria (e.g., debt ratios).
- One-time items: GAAP figures include restructuring charges, asset impairments, and other non-recurring items that can temporarily affect scores.
